ISU POINTS
By Kruti and Misha
TOPIC:
The
objectification /sexualization of women by media
THESIS:
Media tends
to exploit women in mass media such as television, film and advertisement, to
increase the appeal of media, or a product without worrying about the image
that it creates of the people involved.
ARGUMENTS AND OUR
VIEWS:
-
should not be allowed
yet it increases over the years
-
photoshop has taken
over the world of media and is used to enhance the appearance of women in the
pictures
-
Yes men are used too,
but people tend to see more women being used than males
-
We
know all the stereotypes that are seen with women, the supermom, the sex
kitten, the sexy new employee/ secretary etc… whatever the role, (in tv, film,
shows, magazines) women and girls are seen everywhere. the ideal appearance
would be white, amazingly thin yet full of those curves that every girl dreams
of
- Many would agree that some strides
have been made in how the media portray women in film, television and
magazines, and that the last few decades have also seen a growth in the
presence and influence of women in media behind the scenes. Nevertheless,
female stereotypes continue to thrive in the media we consume every day.
- Images of female bodies are
everywhere, with women and girls – and their body parts – selling everything
from food to cars. Popular film and television actresses are becoming younger,
taller and thinner. Women’s magazines are full of articles urging that if you
can just lose those last twenty pounds, you will have it all: the perfect
marriage, loving children, great sex, and a rewarding career.
- Marketers know that girls and
women who are insecure about their bodies are more likely to buy beauty
products, new clothes, and diet aids, and a whole media industry has developed
around fuelling body dissatisfaction.
- The effects of photoshopped images
go beyond influencing girls to buy diet and beauty products. Young girls are
exposed to images of thin, young, air-brushed female bodies which takes them to
depression, loss of self-esteem and unhealthy eating habits
- Advertising, particularly for
fashion and cosmetics, has a powerful effect on how we see ourselves and how we
think we should look. Women’s magazines in particular have a tremendous
influence on body image
- In 2011, images of 10-year-old
Thylane Loubry Blondeau appearing in French Vogue
magazine
HOW WE PLAN ON
PRESENTING OUR ISU:
-
A
powerpoint with our information in point form so it’s easy for the audience to
follow what we’re talking about
-
The
visuals on the ppt will help the audience get a sense of what we’re talking
about
-
A
video on how the negative and sexual portrayal of women has advanced and
worsened over the years
- Created a collage to express our thoughts in images
It displays a woman who is smothered by stereotypical images and general expected image for women in media. Throughout this collage, there is an image of a women being objected and used as a manikin for male pleasure. The males are presented to be dominant over women. The women are highly sexualized in every image in the collage and media hasn’t spared women nor girls.
***the collage wont show up on this but we will have it on our ppt slide...***
